This is a specialist tool for splitting straws, complementing our range of pencil and tube type straw splitters. This design is based on a particular style of antique (and now, quite rare) wooden paddle splitters; initially inspired by a desire to provide museums and straw crafting tutors with an affordable and accessible reproduction article, allowing a 'hands-on' experience when discussing straw working history and teaching practical skills in workshops, we thought it would make a nice addition to our range of commercial splitting tools and give some well deserved homage to our skilled ancestors! The aesthetic finish is deliberately 'imperfect' to better represent an original aged tool of this type.
Niritek tools are produced and packaged in as environmentally friendly way as possible using plant based and recycled materials. These splitters are made from a 3D printed wood infused PLA material which closely resembles the original wooden frame construction finished by hand to give a distinct look and feel and photopolymer resin cutting inserts which are deliberately bright in to make it easier to see how many fins each one has; in the original tool these were usually made of a duller, harder to see metal.
The tool is approximately 9cm tall and 6cm wide.

Our range of straw splitting tools have been designed and tested in close co-operation with leading straw workers from around the world. The pencil type tools shown here are available in two diameters, large and small and come in sustainably packaged sets of four. A set contains four coloured splitters each with a different number of cutting fins; a green (8 fin), a grey (6 fin), a coral (4 fin) and a white (3 fin). Splitters are approximately 67mm in length, the smalls having a diameter of approximately 9mm at the fin base and the larger variety being approximately 13mm diameter at the fin base. The smaller diameter splitters are most suitable for finer work using thin straws down to <2mm in diameter, the larger diameter splitters are more 'general purpose' for larger straw work.

The 10 fin splitter designed for finer straw craft is sold individually and produces evenly split stems down to around 1mm in width.
